The Weekend Round-up
Over the last two years the weekend before Star Wars is released has been very quiet and this past weekend was no different, especially with much of England being hit by snow. As a result, Paddington 2 topped the box office for the fourth time, falling 42% to £1.7m. That takes its total to £29.3m and it’s now the 10th biggest film released in 2017.
Daddy’s Home 2 once again came in second, falling 42% to £1.1m. It now has a total just shy of £10m, on £9.7m and it is currently running 18% below the first Daddy’s Home, which is a great achievement considering that film’s strong boxing day release date.
Wonder leap-frogged Justice League to take the third spot. The heart-warming drama added £743k, a drop of 40%, which takes its total to £2.6m. With a strong Christmas period it should overtake Jacob Tremblay’s big 2016 awards contender, Room, which finished on £4.1m.
Justice League fell to fourth and had the biggest drop in the top 10, falling 63% to £552k. That takes its total to £16.7m and after another disappointing weekend it’s going to fall short of Wonder Woman’s final total of £22.2m.
Completing the top five again was Murder On The Orient Express with £412k. That takes the all-star whodunnit across the and it’s now the 17th biggest film to be released in 2017 to date, having overtaken Wonder Woman in the last week.
Outside of the top five, Jake Gyllenhaal drama, Stronger was the only new entry in the top 10, debuting with £102k, which included £23k from previews.
With the previews for Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle and Ferdinand not included, the box office for the top 15 was the lowest total of the last year and was down 44% from last weekend and 36% from the same weekend last year, when the top films were Fantastic Beasts, Moana and Sully: Miracle On The Hudson.
Next Weekend
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in cinemas on Thursday. As if you need reminding, it’s the sequel to by far the biggest film of all time at the UK box office. The first responses are in from US critics and you can read them here: http://www.indiewire.com/2017/12/star-wars-the-last-jedi-reactions-1201905856/.
The Buzz
The Shape Of Water has just picked up seven Golden Globe nominations, the most of any film, to go along with its Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, cementing its position as one of the frontrunners for 2018 awards. It’s the tale of a mute woman who works at a government facility and forms a relationship with an aquatic creature that is being held at the facility. It stars Sally Hawkins and is likely to be one of the best films of next year. It’s out on Valentine’s day.
Across The Pond
Coco topped the box office for the third successive weekend with $18.3m, which takes its total to $135.8m. Justice League came in second, falling 42% to $9.5m and a new total of $212.1m. Wonder added $8.5m, which was enough for third and it takes its cume to a very impressive $100.3m. The Disaster Artist increased its screen count and went up to fourth spot. That was thanks to $6.4m, which takes its total to $8m. Thor: Ragnarok completed the top five, adding $6.3m for a huge new cume of $301.2m.
