Weekend Round-up

Pitch Perfect 2 held on to the top spot, adding £2.7m from Friday to Sunday and it now sits on a very healthy £9.8m. With no major family film this week, it should prove a major draw for anyone not at school this half term week.

Mad Max: Fury Road held on to second, just behind Pitch Perfect from Friday to Sunday with £2.7m. It has now grossed an impressive £9.7m and all the bad buzz previously surrounding the title now seems like a long time ago.

Tomorrowland: A World Beyond is in third, opening with £1.5m over the weekend.

Horror remake Poltergeist opened in fourth with £1.5m from Friday to Sunday.

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron fell to fifth but had a decent hold, adding £1m over the weekend. It now sits on £45m.

Outside of the top five, Bollywood title, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, was a new entry in ninth and the only other new entries were The New Girlfriend and Moomins On The Riviera in fourteenth and fifteenth respectively.

The box office was down 22% from last weekend and down 34% from the same weekend last year, when the biggest films were X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Godzilla, Bad Neighbours and Postman Pat.

Next Weekend

Dwayne Johnson returns on Thursday in San Andreas. It had its premiere in London last Thursday and DCM’s James Higson was in attendance and said ‘it's an enjoyable disaster movie with great visuals and strong performances from the Rock and Alexandra Daddario’. Matt Goodwin’s response was a bit more lukewarm: ‘it was a good 3 out of 5 for me, but it ticked a lot of boxes in the disaster movie genre. The Rock was good, the special effects were good - the story was alright too (with a pinch of salt).’

Simon Pegg and Lake Bell star in romantic comedy Man Up, out on Friday. There’s only four reviews currently on Metacritic but they’re all positive, so hopefully we have a modest hit on our hands.

Danny Collins sees Al Pacino play the titular rock star who has to re-evaluate his life after receiving a letter that changes his perspective. The great cast includes Annette Bening and Christopher Plummer.

The Buzz

The new Macbeth adaptation starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday and the reviews have been terrific. Robbie Collin in The Telegraph gave the film the full five stars and calls it a ‘towering, consistently ingenious film.’ Guy Lodge in Variety said it’s ‘fearsomely visceral and impeccably performed, it's a brisk, bracing update, even as it remains exquisitely in period.’ It’s out in the UK on 2 October.

Across The Pond

Tomorrowland topped the box office kicking off its run with $33m. It just edged out Pitch Perfect 2, which added a further $30.8m and to date has grossed $118.3m. Mad Max: Fury Road dropped to third, adding $24.7m and after ten days in cinemas has banked $88.1m. The Poltergeist reboot, delivered $22.6m and The Avengers: Age Of Ultron crossed the $400m mark after adding $21.7m and to date has banked $404.8m.
