The Weekend Round-up

Dwayne Johnson confirmed himself as a bona fide box office leading man as San Andreas kicked off with a terrific £4.6m, which included £741k from previews. Last year’s Dwayne Johnson star vehicle, Hercules, finished its entire run with £5.5m, so this is a great result.

Pitch Perfect 2 fell to second, adding another £1.9m, and after a great half term week now sits on £14.5m. That’s over double the first Pitch Perfect’s final total.

Mad Max: Fury Road came in third, with £1.7m and has now banked an impressive £13.7m.

Tomorrowland: A World Beyond had a better hold than both Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road, falling just 27% to £1m, but it has still only grossed £4.1m, which is going to be a big disappointment for Disney.

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron completed the top five and had something of a resurgence over half term, posting the best hold to add another £884k. The biggest film of the year to date has now grossed a huge £47.1m.

Outside of the top five, a couple of new entries disappointed with Simon Pegg / Lake Bell comedy Man Up kicking off its run with £529k in seventh, and Al Pacino comedy, Danny Collins, opened with £225k.

The box office was up 21% from last weekend but down 20% from the same weekend last year, but that weekend was heavily boosted by £2.8m in previews for Maleficent. The other top films last year were when the biggest films were X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Edge Of Tomorrow and A Million Ways To Die In The West.

Next Weekend

Melissa McCarthy is in wonderful form as CIA agent Susan Cooper in Spy. It’s one of the funniest films of the year so far and features great performances from Jason Statham, Rose Byrne and Jude Law. Director Paul Feig’s last film, The Heat, which also starred Melissa McCarthy, finished its run with £7.3m and Spy should beat that.

Insidious 3 is out on Friday. The previous two Insidious films have both crossed the £7m mark, so that will be the target for this third instalment.

Survivor is a gritty action thriller, starring Milla Jovovich and Pierce Brosnan. It currently has a score of 29 on Metacritic.

The Buzz

Cameron Crowe is the man responsible for Jerry Maguire, Singles and Almost Famous and his latest film, Aloha, opened in the US on Friday. An all-star affair, the cast includes Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray and Alec Baldwin.

Across The Pond

San Andreas destroyed the competition in the US too, kicking off with $54.6m. That’s the best performance for any film where Dwayne Johnson is the sole lead. Pitch Perfect 2 took second place with $14.8m and now has a terrific cume of $147.5m. Tomorrowland fell a chunky 57% to $14.3m and after ten days in cinemas has grossed $63.7m. Mad Max: Fury Road fell to fourth with $14.2m, and now has a cume of $116m. Avengers: Age of Ultron took fifth with $11.4m and to date has a huge cume of $427.6m.
