The Weekend Round-up
Despite a poor showing in the US, bawdy comedy of errors Sex Tape took the top spot this weekend with £1.4m (incl. £444k from previews last Wednesday & Thursday). Perhaps this was a case of truth helping fiction, with the recent scandal surrounding the release of intimate photos of female stars from iCloud, no doubt helping the timing of the film.
Previous box-office topper Lucy has held up well, only falling 39% to £1.2m and a very healthy total of £10.4m meaning it's it still on track to finish its run north of £12m. A good example of a more niche film that has performed well this summer.
Starring a strong cast including Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth and being based on the popular novel couldn't help new entry Before I go to Sleep, which opened with just under £800k. Likewise, The Hundred-Foot Journey opened with £695k, a total that was much lower than expected. More so for Hundred-Foot Journey as it’s now topped $45.7m in the US.
Success story of the summer, Guardians of the Galaxy retains its fifth spot, falling 34% to £680k for a terrific total of £25.8m.
Another new entry, The Guest, starring Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens, opened in sixth with £313k, with a better than expected return.
Overall the box office was down 27% from last weekend and down 17% from the same weekend last year when Riddick & About Time went on general release.
Next Weekend
The coming week sees British drama Pride, which is being talked about as another Billy Elliott in terms of portraying a strong social message within a warm story-line, plus one of the great Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final roles in the adaptation of the John Le Carre novel A Most Wanted Man
The Buzz
The Equalizer remake with Denzel Washington hits cinemas on 26 September, from the same director as Training Day and promises to be gritty & hard-hitting.
Across The Pond
Guardians of the Galaxy held on to the top spot, despite falling 40% to $10.2m for a cume of $294.6m & still on track to finish over $300m. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles again holds onto second spot, falling 45% to $6.5m and it has now grossed a strong $174.6m. If I Stay remains in third with $5.8m and after ten days has grossed $39.7m. In a very static week The Identical was the highest new entry, kicking off with $1.9m.
