Box Office Round-up

Snow White opened at the top of the UK box office with £3.9m, the third-highest opening weekend of the year to date. In terms of Disney live-action releases, that’s just below Mufasa: The Lion King, which saw big success across the Christmas holiday period and is currently on £33.2m. Hopefully Snow White can see similar success across the Easter holiday period which starts in a couple of weeks.

Ne Zha 2 is the fifth-biggest film of all-time worldwide, but it is the second biggest film in the UK & Ireland this weekend, and that’s thanks to £1m from seven days of previews. That takes its total to £1.2m and it’s getting a 3D release next weekend, so hopefully it has a bit more to add, and it could be an option for families across the Easter holidays.

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy fell to third, adding £776k, a drop of 36% from last weekend. That takes its total after six weekends in cinemas to a huge £44.5m and it’s now the second highest grossing Bridget Jones film, having surpassed Bridget Jones’s Diary, which finished on £42.1m. Only Bridget Jones’s Baby is ahead, with £48.3m, and looks out of reach for this fourth film.

Black Bag had a slightly disappointing opening weekend last weekend but followed it up with a terrific hold, falling just 18% to £736k. After 10 days in cinemas the stylish spy-thriller is up to £2.3m. In 2013, Soderbergh directed another star-led thriller in Side Effects, which opened with a very similar £905k, and finished its run just shy of £5m, and it looks like Black Bag might have similar legs.

Mickey 17 rounded out the top five, adding £730k on its third weekend, a healthy drop of 41% from last weekend. That takes its total after 17 days in cinemas to £5.9m, and at the same stage in its run, Gareth Edwards’ The Creator, another ambitious sci-fi, was up to £5.4m, so Mickey 17 is tracking ahead of that.

Outside of the top five, Oscar-winning animation Flow opened in sixth with £412k, which includes £58k from previews. It would also appear that two Robert De Niros are not better than one, as The Alto Knights could only open with £389k in seventh.

Next Weekend

A Working Man is the latest action-thriller from Jason Statham and director David Ayer (The Beekeeper). Statham plays Levon Cade who left his profession behind to work construction and be a good dad to his daughter. But when a local girl vanishes, he's asked to return to the skills that made him a mythic figure in the shadowy world of counter-terrorism.

Novocaine is an action-thriller starring Jack Quaid and Amber Midthunder. When the girl of his dreams is kidnapped, a man incapable of feeling physical pain turns his rare condition into an unexpected advantage in the fight to rescue her.

The Woman In The Yard is a horror from Blumhouse. A mysterious woman repeatedly appears in a family's front yard, often delivering chilling warnings and unsettling messages, leaving them to question her identity, motives and the potential danger she might pose. Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson, Till) stars.

The End is a musical-fantasy starring Tilda Swinton and George Mackay. After decades alone, a wealthy family living in a salt mine encounters a stranger.

The Buzz

Freakier Friday is a sequel to one of Lindsay Lohan’s most famous films. In the original she starred as Anna with Jamie Lee Curtis, who played Tess, her mother. In a freak incident, they switch bodies and are forced to live each other's lives, learning to empathise with each other. In this sequel, Anna now has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might strike twice. Freaky Friday is a film that is thought of with a lot of fondness, and that nostalgia is going to be a big driver for audiences when this sequel hits cinemas on 8 August. It’s one of the best films for 16-34 women in the summer.

Across The Pond

Disney’s Snow White opened in the top spot with $43m, Black Bag added $4.4m in second, which takes its total to $14.9m. Captain America: Brave New World added $4.1m in third, which takes its total to $192.1m. Mickey 17 fell to fourth, adding $3.9m for a new total of $40.2m. Novocaine rounded out the top five, adding $3.8m for a new total of $15.8m.
