Box Office Round-up
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse held on to the top spot, falling 51% (once previews are removed) to £4.1m which takes its total after 11 days in cinemas to £16.2m. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse finished its run with £10.9m, so this sequel has already surpassed that and is looking at least a 100% uplift on the first film. It’s currently the sixth biggest film to be released in 2023 and in the next few days will overtake John Wick: Chapter 4 to become the fifth biggest film released this year.
Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts opened in second with just under £3m, with £506k of that coming from Thursday previews. The last Transformers film to hit cinemas was the spin-off Bumblebee, which opened with £5.1m in December 2018, which included £2.6m from four days of previews, so the Friday to Sunday totals were similar. That film finished its run with £12.8m. Transformers: The Last Knight finished with £9.6m in 2017, far from the highs of 2011’s Dark Of The Moon (£28.1m). According to PostTrak’s exit poll the film scored 4.5 stars and an 88% Total Positive reaction, so it appears to be going down well with audiences.
The Little Mermaid came in third this weekend, adding £2.1m, a drop of exactly 50% from last weekend. That takes its total after three weekends in cinemas to £20m and it’s not holding up like Aladdin did, so a final total closer to Dumbo’s £25.1m looks likely, rather than Aladdin’s £37.3m.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 came in fourth and is still holding up well on its sixth week. The MCU blockbuster added £512k, a drop of 49% from last weekend, and takes its total to £35.6m. It’s now £6m ahead of the first film and just under £5m behind the second film.
Fast X rounded out the top five, adding £477k, a drop of 56% from last weekend. The all-star action film is now up to £14.3m and looks like it will fall short of the final total of Fast 9, which finished its run with £16.5m. In fact, it looks like being the lowest grossing film in the series since Fast & Furious, the confusingly titled fourth instalment in 2009, which finished its run with £13.7m.
Outside of the top five, historical drama Chevalier opened in eight with £124k, which includes £12k from previews, while South Asian title Maurh opened in night with £32k. Picturehouse Entertainment had another title crack the top 10 as War Pony opened with £32k, which includes £15k from previews.
Next Weekend
The Flash is the latest DC Comics action extravaganza to hit cinemas. Barry Allen uses his super speed to change the past, but his attempt to save his family creates a world without super heroes, forcing him to race for his life in order to save the future. Michael Keaton excitingly returns as Batman and it’s in cinemas from Wednesday.
The Buzz
The competition for the best tagline of 2023 has a new leader as Expendables 4 (or Expend4bles as it’s being called) unveiled ‘They’ll die when they’re dead’ in its initial marketing last week. This time around the action veterans will square up against an arms dealer who commands the might of a massive private army. Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone once again return and they are joined by Megan Fox, 50 Cent, Andy Garcia and Dolph Lundgren, along with superstars of Asian action cinema Iko Uwais and Tony Jaa. It’s set to be action-packed and ridiculous and a ton of fun and one of the best films for 16-34 men in September.
Across The Pond
Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts fared much better in North America, opening with a three day total of $60.5m, which is not far behind the $65m five-day opening of the last Transformers film, The Last Knight in 2017. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse fell 54% to $55.4m, which takes its total to an impressive $225.4m. The Little Mermaid posted a decent hold, falling 45% to $22.8m, which takes its total to $228.8m. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 posted another strong hold, falling just 34% to $7m and a new total of $335.4m. Finally, The Boogeyman completed the top five, adding $6.9m for a new total of $24.7m.
