Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to deliver, adding a huge £10.3m on its third weekend. That means it is now on £97.4m and has overtaken both SPECTRE and Avatar to become the second biggest film of all time in the UK. It is set to overtake Skyfall and become the biggest by this time next week.
Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg comedy Daddy’s Home had a great second weekend, adding £2.9m for a terrific cume of £8.1m. It has offered a great alternative to Star Wars across the Christmas period.
Jennifer Lawrence star vehicle Joy was the highest new entry in third, opening with £1.5m, which included £106k from previews. Previous David O.Russell and Jennifer Lawrence collaborations Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle opened with £1.3m and £3.5m (including £1.1m in previews) respectively.
The Danish Girl opened in fourth with £1.4m. It was hoping to replicate the success of The Theory Of Everything, which opened with £3.7m (including £803k from previews) on the same weekend last year, but was unable to.
Snoopy And Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie completed the top five, adding £1.3m for a new total of £7.1m.
Outside of the top five, SPECTRE added another £279k and now sits on a huge £94.3m. It has now overtaken Avatar, which was the second biggest film of all time in the UK but they’ve both been surpassed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The box office was up 14% from last weekend and down 5% from the same weekend last year, when the top four films were The Theory Of Everything, The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, Paddington and The Woman In Black: Angel Of Death.
Next Weekend
The Hateful Eight is the latest epic western from Quentin Tarantino. More than any other director, Tarantino is a genre of his own and is a bigger draw than any of his actors. The film has been well received by critics, with five stars in The Guardian and The Telegraph and his last two films have been box office successes, with Django Unchained grossing over £15.7m in 2013. Unfortunately, it appears that Cineworld have been unable to reach an agreement with the distributor, Entertainment, and will not be showing the film.
