Box Office Round-up

It was going to take something special to topple Bob Dylan and Timothée Chalamet from the top of the UK & Ireland box office, and Dog Man was just the man / dog / dog man to do it. The film featuring the character made famous in Dav Pilkey’s graphic novel series opened with an impressive £3.3m, the biggest opening weekend of the year to date. This time last year, Illumination’s Migration opened with £3.6m and went on to a total of £21.5m, so hopefully Dog Man will be aiming for a similar total.

A Complete Unknown, James Mangold’s biopic of Bob Dylan, added £1.2m, down just 26% from last week. That takes its total after 17 days in cinemas to £8.3m, and it is well on the way to surpassing Mangold’s previous music-biopic Walk The Line, which finished its run with £10.4m. With every other Oscar Best Picture nominated film seemingly shooting itself in the foot, A Complete Unknown could easily swoop in and take the top prize. If so, there’ll be plenty more box office to come.

Mufasa: The Lion King fell to third, adding £701k, down 38% from last weekend. That takes its total after eight weekends in cinemas to £30.3m and it’s now less than £7m behind the final total of 2019’s Aladdin (£37.2m). With half-term next week it should get pretty close before the end of its run.

Event cinema is back in the top five as Macbeth: David Tennant and Cush Jumbo added £691k over the weekend for a hugely impressive total of £1.5m.

Another new entry September 5 rounded out the top five, opening with £639k, which includes £122k from previews after opening on Thursday. This is not the major awards contender we hoped it would be, only garnering one Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, but it’s made a solid start at the box office nonetheless.

Outside of the top five, The Brutalist is up to £2.5m in sixth, and should be around for a while longer, with major BAFTA and Oscar success expected. Music documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin opened in eighth with £418k, which includes £122k from Wednesday and Thursday previews.

Next Weekend

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy is the fourth film featuring the British comedy icon and hits cinemas on Thursday. Bridget Jones navigates life as a widow and single mom with the help of her family, friends, and former lover, Daniel. Back to work and on the apps, she's pursued by a younger man and maybe - just maybe - her son's science teacher. Leo Woodall and Chiwetel Ejiofor join Renee Zellweger and it’s going to be HUGE.

Captain America: Brave New World is the latest film in the MCU. Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, finds himself in the middle of an international incident and must discover the motive behind a nefarious global plan. Harrison Ford joins the MCU for the first time.

Heart Eyes is a romantic horror starring Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding. For the past several years, the Heart Eyes Killer has wreaked havoc on Valentine's Day by stalking and murdering romantic couples. This Valentine's Day, no couple is safe.

The Sloth Lane is a new animation. After a terrifying storm destroys their home, a speedy sloth named Laura and her kooky family move to the big city in their rusted old food truck hoping to make their business a success.

The Buzz

Jurassic World: Rebirth is the latest film in the ever-popular series, with the three Jurassic World films to date having grossed over £141m at the UK & Ireland box office. A whole new cast is going back to the island, with Scarlett Johansson leading a team that includes two-time Oscar-winner, Mahershala Ali, and fresh from Wicked, Jonathan Bailey. Five years post-Jurassic World: Dominion, an expedition braves isolated equatorial regions to extract DNA from three massive prehistoric creatures for a groundbreaking medical breakthrough. It hits cinemas on 2 July and is set to be one of the biggest films of the summer, delivering over eight 16-34 TVRs.

Across The Pond

Dog Man stayed in the top spot with $13.7m, which takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to $54.1m. Heart Eyes opened in second with $8.5m, while Love Hurts opened in third with $5.8m. Mufasa: The Lion King added $3.9m in fourth for a new total of $235.2m, while Companion completed the top five, adding $3m for a new total of $15.5m.
