Box Office Round-up
The Flash took the top spot this week. It opened with a brilliant £4.2m over the first five days of its release, running across 660 locations. We can see this DC Comics adaption maintaining at least top five over the next couple of weeks.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse falls to second place after The Flash, falling by 36% to £2.6m taking its total to £20.3m, which is a healthy figure for its third week. It’s prequel Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse finished its run with £10.9m, so seeing that this sequel has already doubled in box office figures is really promising.
Coming in at third this weekend is The Little Mermaid. Adding £1.3m to its total, dropping by 38% compared to last weekend, which now takes its total of £22m after four weekends. If we compare this film to past classic Disney animations-turned-live-action films, The Little Mermaid will likely just come under Dumbo’s final total of £25.1m.
Overall, the box office saw a 2% uplift from the previous weekend and is down by 24% from the same weekend last year. This is mainly excused by the cinemagoers still reeling from the release of Top Gun: Maverick.
Next Weekend
No Hard Feelings is the latest outing from Academy Award-winning Jennifer Lawrence. On the brink of losing her childhood home, Maddie (Lawrence) discovers an intriguing job listing: wealthy helicopter parents looking for someone to "date" their introverted 19-year-old son, Percy, before he leaves for college. To her surprise, Maddie soon discovers the awkward Percy is no sure thing.
Asteroid City is also landing next week. The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.
The Buzz
Tom Cruise took to Rome’s Spanish Steps for the premiere of the action-packed Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The gala screening took place in one of the global locations featuring in the upcoming release. Reviews have been rolling in and critics appear to be extremely positive, calling it ‘exhilarating’ and particularly praising Cruise and co-star Hayley Atwell’s performances. Catch it on the global rollout from July 12.
Across the Pond
Debuts of the weekend, The Flash and Elemental collected $55 million and $29.5 million respectively. In third place, Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse maintained momentum, collecting $27.8 million in its third weekend which increases its total takings so far at $280 million in North America and $489.3 million worldwide. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts adds $20 million to a $103.6 million total. The Little Mermaid rounds out the top 5 in its fourth week, adding $11.6 million. Overall, the weekend takings amount to a healthy $192 million.
