Box Office Round-up

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 posted a terrific hold this weekend, falling just 42% to £5.3m. For comparison, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 fell 54% on its second weekend, while more recent MCU films Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness fell 66% and 62% respectively. After two weekends in cinemas, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is £24m. It has already surpassed Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania’s total of £19.3m (despite opening at a similar level) and by this time next week should have matched the final total of the first Guardians film, which finished on £28.6m.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie stayed in second on its sixth weekend adding £858k, a drop of 35% from last weekend. That takes its total to a huge £51.1m and in terms of the biggest animated films of all-time, it’s closing in on fourth place, which is currently held by Frozen II with a final total of £53.8m.

Love Again was this weekend’s highest new entry, opening with £341k, which includes £107k from previews after opening on Wednesday. This Celine Dion inspired rom-com doesn’t look like matching Jennifer Lopez’s Marry Me, which finished its run with £2.3m.

Comedy sequel Book Club: The Next Chapter opened in third with £299k. The first film opened with a Friday to Sunday total of £694k, so this first film is some way down on that. That film finished its run with £4.2m, so a the moment, Book Club: The Next Chapter would do well to get to £2m.

Completing the top five is Evil Dead Rise, which on its fourth weekend fell 48% to £258k, taking its total to just over £5m. This continues a strong year for horror films so far with M3GAN, Scream VI and now Evil Dead Rise all grossing more than £5m. Just a reminder that the last Evil Dead film in cinemas finished its run with £3.4m in 2013.

Outside the top five, Indian drama 2018 increased on last weekend’s total by 364%, after increasing its screen count by almost 100. It has now grossed an impressive £430k. In ninth John Wick: Chapter 4 is now up to £17.4m, which is £7m more than the last John Wick film!

Next Weekend

Fast X is the 10th instalment in the hugely popular and hugely noisy series. This time around Dom Toretto and his family are targeted by the vengeful son of drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and it’s the first in an apparently three-part series to finish off the Fast franchise.

The Buzz

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is the sequel to one of the most beloved animated films of the 21st century. The first film is currently #66 in the IMDb top 250, the third highest placed English language animation, while Empire Magazine named it the greatest animated film of all time in 2021. This feverishly anticipated sequel sees Miles Morales catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles must redefine what it means to be a hero. It’s going to be one of the best films for 16-34s this summer and we’re forecasting it to deliver a conservative 9 16-34 adult TVRs.
