The Weekend Round-up

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies stayed in the top spot, adding £4.2m, and to date has grossed $28.8m, making it the fourth biggest film of the year. It’s certain to be the highest grossing film released in 2014, but it will probably overtake The Lego Movie next Friday or Saturday, so will not finish 2014 as the year’s biggest film.

Ridley Scott’s biblical epic, Exodus: Gods and Kings opened strongly in second with £2.6m. That’s just above the £2.5m that Noah opened with in April and that film finished on £10.1m, so that will be the target for Exodus.

Paddington continued to provide a big draw in third, increasing 2% to £2.6m, and to date has grossed a hugely impressive £24m. It’s now the 10th biggest film of 2014 and will rise a few places higher before the year is out.

Annie opened in fourth with £2.3m, although that includes six days of previews worth £1.2m, having opened last Saturday. Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb completed the top five, falling just 14% to £1.6m for a cume of £5.4m. Oscar hopeful, Unbroken opened in seventh with £657k.

The box office was up 9% from last weekend and down 10% from the same weekend last year, when The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug and Frozen were the two strongest performers.

Next Weekend

Birdman, The Theory Of Everything and The Woman In Black open on new year’s day and will be looking to capitalise on what is traditionally a strong period for cinema.

The Buzz

Mark Wahlberg thriller The Gambler had a disappointing opening in the US, kicking off with $9.1m this weekend and including Christmas day has earned $14.1m. It hits UK cinemas on 23 January.

Across The Pond

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies added $40.9m and to date has grossed $168m. It is on track to at least match The Desolation of Smaug's final total of $258m. Stephen Sondheim musical, Into the Woods opened in second with $31.5m and including it its Christmas Day gross, the Disney musical has so far earned $46.1m. Just behind in third is Unbroken, which opened with $31.7m and including Christmas Day, has earned $47.3m. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb had a strong weekend, increasing 20% to $20.2m for a cume of $54.7m. Annie also had a decent weekend, increasing 4% to $16.5m and to date has earned $45.7m.
