Box Office Round-up

The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to be the biggest film in cinemas and has now crossed the £40m mark at the UK & Ireland box office. The Illumination-Nintendo behemoth added £4.3m over the weekend, a drop of 44% from last weekend, which takes its total to a huge £41.6m. Minions: The Rise Of Gru is the biggest animated film since cinemas re-opened with £47m and it’s only a matter of time before The Super Mario Bros. Movie surpasses that. It also looks like it will have the legs to get to £50m and join the likes of Toy Story 3 & 4, Frozen II, and Incredibles 2 as one of the only animated films to reach that milestone.

Continuing the terrific recent performance of the horror genre, Evil Dead Rise opened in second with £1.5m (including £9k from previews). The last time a new Evil Dead film was in cinemas was 10 years ago on this very weekend, and it opened with £1.4m on its way to a final total of £3.4m, so Evil Dead Rise is currently tracking ahead of that title. It’s also worth nothing that this new film was originally intended for a streaming release but was given a theatrical release when the studio realised the quality of the film and it’s a decision that looks to have paid off.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves fell to third but posted a strong hold, falling 35% to £769k, which takes its total to £11.9m. It’s now the sixth biggest film released so far in 2023.

In fourth is John Wick: Chapter 4, which added £590k, a drop of just 28% from last weekend, the best hold in this week’s top 15. That takes its total to a hugely impressive £15.9m, making it the fourth biggest film released so far in 2023. It has now grossed more than £5m more than John Wick: Chapter Three - Parabellum.

Amazon Studios title, Air rounded out the top five, adding £516k, a drop of just 29% from last weekend. That takes its total to £3.6m and its proving there’s definitely still an audience for adult drama in the cinema.

Outside of the top five, screen-life thriller Missing opened with £382k, which includes £29k from previews. This is a stand-alone sequel to 2018 thriller Searching, which opened with £765k and finished its run on £2.2m. Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan is the latest South Asian film to land in the top 10 of the box office, opening with £293k. Finally, French period action-drama The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan opened with £162k, which includes £17k from previews. This is part one with part two due in cinemas in France in December, so hopefully not long after that here.

The box office is down 41% from last weekend and up 7% from the same weekend last year.

The Buzz

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 hits cinemas in nine days and it’s set to be one of the biggest films of the summer, forecast to deliver 12 16-34 adult TVRs. The lovable band of misfits return and are still reeling from the loss of Gamora. Starlord/Peter Quill rallies his team to defend the universe and one of their own - a mission that could mean the end of the Guardians if not successful. The first twiter reviews are coming out and Digital Spy’s Movies Editor, and one-time guest on the DCM podcast, Ian Sandwell tweeted ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is a brilliant end to a brilliant trilogy. It's very funny, emotional and everybody gets their stand-out moment. Will Poulter's Warlock is a terrific addition, yet the focus is rightly on telling a satisfying end for the Guardians. Gonna miss them.’ It’s in cinemas from 3 May.

Across The Pond

Evil Dead Rise opened in second with an impressive $23.5m, which is just behind the $25.8m Evil Dead opened with in 2013. Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant opened in third with $6.3m, while John Wick: Chapter 4 added $5.8m in fourth, which takes its total to an impressive $168.9m.
