The Weekend Round-up

Marvel have done it again! Avengers: Infinity War opened with a huge £29.4m, which includes £6.3m from Thursday previews. The Friday to Sunday total of £23.1m is the third biggest opening weekend of all time, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens (£24.3m) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (£23.8m). On Saturday it delivered the biggest Saturday in history, grossing £9.2m and that’s the third biggest single day in history, behind only the opening day for The Force Awakens and The Deathly Hallows Part 2. Infinity War has only been in cinemas four days and it is already the fourth biggest film 2018 to date and looks nailed on to overtake Black Panther (£50.2m) to take the top spot.

It’s amazing what some terrible weather will do. After The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society opened softly on a sunny weekend last week, it increased on last weekend’s total by 19% this week to £969k. That takes its total to £3m and it had a strong midweek last week, so expect it to do the same this week. Their Finest finished on £4.1m so Guernsey is going to sail past that.

A Quiet Place also had another great weekend, falling just 10% from last weekend to £920k. That takes its total to £9.9m and it should cross the £10m mark in the next couple of days. By this time next week it will have overtaken Get Out’s final total of £10.4m.

Rampage took something of a hit in the face of Avengers: Infinity War, falling 48% to 736k, which takes its total to £7.8m. It’s going to finish at a similar level to Dwayne Johnson’s 2016 film Central Intelligence, which finished on £8.6m

Peter Rabbit bounced back from the sunny weather last week, increasing on last weekend by 20% to £586k, which was enough for fifth spot. That takes its total to £39.6m and by this time next week it will be have crossed the £40m mark.

Outside of the top five, on another great achievement for Marvel and Disney, Black Panther has now crossed the £50m mark, only the second Marvel film to do so in the UK – the other being Avengers Assemble

The only other new entry in the top 15 was British thriller, Beast, which opened in 12th with £166k, which included £39k from previews.

Overall, the box office was up % from last weekend and up % from the same weekend last year, when the top films were Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, Fast & Furious 8, The Boss Baby and Beauty And The Beast.

Next Weekend

Tully is the new film from Jason Reitman (Juno, Up In The Air) and re-teams him with Young Adult star Charlize Theron. Theron plays Marlo, a mother of three including a newborn, who is gifted a night nanny by her brother. Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully.

I Feel Pretty is a comedy starring Amy Schumer as a woman struggling with insecurity who wakes from a fall believing she is the most beautiful and capable woman on the planet. Her new confidence empowers her to live fearlessly, but what happens when she realizes her appearance never changed?

Strangers: Prey At Night is a sequel to the 2008 horror. A family of four staying at a secluded mobile home park for the night are stalked and then hunted by three masked psychopaths.

Lean On Pete is the latest drama from Andrew Haigh (45 Years). A teenager gets a summer job working for a horse trainer and befriends the fading racehorse.

The Buzz

Deadpool 2 is the next big blockbuster released this spring and Deadline are reporting that it’s tracking to open bigger than the first in the US. The first one opened with $132m and this second instalment is headed for an opening north of $150m (full details here: http://deadline.com/2018/04/deadpool-2-opening-box-office-projections-1202377273/). In the UK, Deadpool opened with £10m in 2016, so this sequel will be aiming for more than that and the early signs are good. The final trailer is out now and is the best yet: https://youtu.be/20bpjtCbCz0.
