The Weekend Round-up

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation opened in the top spot with £5.4m, which included £1m from Thursday previews. Even the sunny weather couldn’t stop the Tom Cruise-led franchise to the ninth highest Friday to Sunday opening of the year. In terms of the other films in the franchise, it’s the third biggest opening in the series, behind MI3 (£4.8m) and MI2 (£4.6m).

Last week’s top film, Inside Out, fell to second with a hefty 52% drop to £3.6m. After ten days in cinemas, the Pixar animation has now grossed £17m.

Southpaw moved up one place to third with a strong hold, falling just 32% to £1.1m. The Jake Gyllenhaal boxing drama has now grossed a solid £4m.

Ant-Man fell to fourth, adding £1.1m and has now banked £12.8m.

Minions fell 56% to £1m but it crossed the £40m mark in the process. It looks like it will just fall short of Despicable Me 2’s final total of £47.5m.

Outside of the top five, the Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara comedy, Hot Pursuit, opened in seventh with £312k and Adam Sandler comedy, The Cobbler, opened in fifteenth with £58k.

Overall, the box office was down 19% from last weekend and down 8% from the same weekend last year, when the top three films were Guardians Of The Galaxy, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, How To Train Your Dragon 2 and Hercules.

The Buzz

Straight Outta Compton is a biopic about the legendary hip-hop group, N.W.A. that launched the careers of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Eazy-E. It opens in the US next week and the first reviews are coming in. Variety were glowing, saying it’s ’intensely human and personal in its characterizations and attention to detail, director F. Gary Gray’s movie is a feast for hip-hop connoisseurs and novices alike.’ While Screen International were impressed, they weren’t quite as effusive: ‘despite a twisty, juicy and compelling story, there remains a staid conventionality that keeps the political and thematic undercurrents from being explored as satisfyingly as one might hope.” It’s out in the UK on 27 August.
