The Weekend Round-up

DC Comics’ big superhero team up Justice League topped the box office with £7.3m, the ninth biggest opening weekend of the year to date. It’s the first time that DC’s biggest superheroes have appeared in the same film together but it fell short of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opened with £14.6m in March 2016. Suicide Squad opened with £11.3m in August 2016, while Wonder Woman opened with £6.2m (including £1.2m in previews) in June this year.

After a marvellous opening weekend last weekend Paddington 2 had a terrific hold, falling just 20% to £6.6m. That takes the all ages delight to a 10-day total of £16.9m and it looks set to be one of the biggest films of 2017. After 10 days the first film was on £10.3m, so this second instalment is tracking well ahead.

Murder On The Orient Express fell to third and after its great hold last weekend it took something of a tumble, falling 48% to £2.3m. That takes its total to £17.8m and it should have crossed £20m by this time next week.

Thor: Ragnarok saw a big drop, thanks to Justice League, but still added £1.2m for a new total of £28.2m. It’s still likely to get to £30m and a place on the top 10 of 2017.

On its third weekend, A Bad Moms Christmas experienced its first drop, falling 40% to £762k. That takes its total to £5.8m and with five weeks still until Christmas, it has plenty of time to top the first film’s £8.4m.

Outside of the top five, Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool opened in sixth with £236k (including £21k from previews), while Ingrid Goes West opened in 11th with £65k.

Overall the box office was down 1% from last weekend and down 14% from the same weekend last year, when the top films were Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, Arrival and Trolls

It previewed on Saturday and Sunday to some success, grossing £1.6m and it’s in cinemas from Wednesday.

Suburbicon is the latest directorial project from George Clooney. It stars Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac and is set in the 1950s where a home invasion rattles a quiet family town.

Battle Of The Sexes is the true story of the 1973 tennis match between World number one Billie Jean King and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs. It stars an awards-worthy Emma Stone and Steve Carell.

The Buzz

Wonder is based on the New York Times bestseller of the same name. It tells the inspiring and heartwarming story of Auggie Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time. Room star Jacob Tremblay plays Auggie, while Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts play his parents. It opened in the US on Friday to impressive results (see below), while critics have been fulsome in their praise too.

Across The Pond

Justice League opened in the top spot with a softer than expected $94m. Considering that Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opened with $166m last year, it’s a disappointing result. Second place was taken by Wonder, which kicked off its run with $28m. The audience was broken down 68% female vs. 32% male and of the overall audience, 66% were over the age of 25. Thor: Ragnarok fell to third place adding $21.7m, which takes its cume to $247.3m. Daddy’s Home 2 fell 51% to fourth place with $14.4m, which takes its total to $50.2m. while Murder on the Orient Express completed the top five, adding $13.8m for a new cume of $51.7m.
