The Weekend Round-up
- Toy Story 4 lived up to its billing as the biggest animated film of the year, opening with a huge £13.3m, the highest Friday to Sunday total for an animated film of all-time. It’s an even more impressive figure when you consider it was one of the sunniest weekends of the year so far. Last year, the big Pixar sequel was Incredibles 2, which opened with £9.7m on its way to becoming the second biggest animated film of all-time in the UK with £56.2m, so Toy Story 4 has a good chance of topping that. The biggest animated film of all-time in the UK is Toy Story 3, which finished its run with £73.9m making it the ninth biggest film of all-time in the UK, so Toy Story 4 will have to post some very strong holds over the coming weeks to get close to that.
- After four weekends in the top spot Aladdin fell to second and took its first real tumble in the face of Toy Story 4, falling 59% to £1.2m. That takes its total to £32.6m and until it’s overtaken by Toy Story 4 in the next few weeks, it remains the third biggest film of 2019 to date.
- Men In Black International also took a bit of a tumble, falling 64% to £1m, which takes its total to just under £5m. When you consider the last MIB film, Men In Black 3 finished on £22.3m, the performance of Men In Black International has to be considered something of a disappointment.
- Rocketman was also a victim of the sunny weather, falling 52% to £784k. Over the last week it has crossed the £20m mark and now sits on £21.1m, a strong total considering it opened with £5.4m. It’s now the fifth biggest film of 2019 to date.
- Sci-fi horror Brightburn completed the top five kicking off its run with £509k, which includes £211k from previews after opening on Wednesday.
- Another horror opened just outside of the top five. Chuckie is back and voiced by Mark Hamill in Child’s Play which opened in seventh with £248k.
Overall the box office is up 57% from last weekend and up 82% from the same weekend last year when the top films were Ocean's 8, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Hereditary and Deadpool 2.

The Buzz
Le Mans ‘66 is the story of American car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles who battle corporate interference, the laws of physics and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford and challenge Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. Previously titled Ford V. Ferrari this looks like star-led grown up drama of the classiest kind. Matt Damon and Christian Bale star as Shelby and Miles, and its directed by James Mangold who has moved into the big league after the brilliant Logan. It’s in cinemas on 15 November and looks unmissable.
Across The Pond
Toy Story 4 topped the box office in the US with $118m, which is the biggest opening in the series but a bit below industry forecasts. Child's Play opened in second with $14.1, while Aladdin fell to third, adding $12.2m for a new total of $287.5m. Men in Black International fell to fourth, tumbling 64% in its second weekend to $10.8m, which takes its total to $52.7m. The Secret Life of Pets 2 completed the top five, adding $10.3m for a new total of $117.6m.
