The Weekend Box Office Round-up
On a good weekend for the box office, four films grossed over £1m, with a possible fifth just falling short by less than £3k. Video game to movie adaptations have had a famously checkered history but Uncharted can be placed firmly in the success column, opening at the top of the box office with a barnstorming £4.7m. Tomb Raider is an obvious comparison, both in size of the property and thematically too, and 2018’s incarnation of Tomb Raider opened with a Friday to Sunday total of £2.6m on its way to £7.7m. Assassin’s Creed is a good comparative too, and that finished its run with a similar total to Tomb Raider, on £8m. Uncharted will have sailed past both these totals after little more than a week.
After two big weekends in the top spot Sing 2 fell to second, adding £3.2m, a drop of 38% from last weekend. That takes its total to £16.8m and as this is half term week, by this time next week it will have sailed past the final total of Peter Rabbit 2 (£20.5m), which is currently the biggest family film since cinemas re-opened.
Kenneth Branagh’s second big screen release in less than a month, Death On The Nile, opened in third with £1.9m. This follow-up to Murder On The Orient Express has been delayed many times due to Covid and has experienced a few issues with casting so it’s not a major surprise that it has fallen well short of that film’s £5.1m opening in 2017. That film finished its run on £24.2m but right now Death On The Nile is aiming for double figures.
Branagh’s Belfast came in fourth, posting the best hold of any film the top 10, falling 29% to £1.1m. That takes its total to £11.3m and it received a boost last Thursday with seven Oscar nominations. The BAFTA and Oscar ceremonies are not until mid-to-late March, so Belfast should be in cinemas for a while yet. Jackass Forever completed the top five, falling 52% to £997k and a new total of £4.1m. It has overtaken the final total of 2003’s Jackaas: The Movie and has its sights set on Jackass 3D’s final total of £5.6m.
Outside of the top five, Jennifer Lopez and Maluma’s romantic comedy Marry Me opened in sixth with £701k (including £15k from previews). Spider-Man: No Way Home is in seventh and is now up to £92.8m and it’s currently the sixth highest grossing film in UK & Ireland history but by this time next week it could have overtaken Avatar in fifth.
Overall the box office was up 13% from last weekend.
Next Weekend
Dog is the directorial debut of Channing Tatum, who also stars. Two former Army Rangers are paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. Briggs (Tatum) and Lulu (a Belgian Malinois), race down the Pacific Coast to reach a fellow soldier's funeral.
Across The Pond
With Uncharted not opening until next weekend in the US, Death on the Nile opened in the top spot. Kenneth Branagh’s whodunnit opened with $12.8m. Jackass Forever fell to second, adding $8.1m for a new total of $37.4m. Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson rom-com Marry Me opened in third with $8m. This is available to watch at home on HBO Max too. Spider-Man: No Way Home added another $7.2m and is now up to $759m, just $1m behind Avatar! Completing the top five is Liam Neeson action thriller Blacklight, which opened with $3.6m.
