Armando Iannucci’s The Death of Stalin was not far behind with 13 nominations, while Francis Lee’s God’s Own Country and Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri both received 11 nominations.
Announced at a ceremony hosted by Maisie Williams and Hayley Squires on Wednesday 11 November at The London Edition, the list of nominees included an eclectic range of British films including Thomas Q. Napper’s boxing drama Jawbone and the eagerly anticipated Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool, whose Jamie Bell is nominated for Best Actor.
The awards ceremony takes places on Sunday 10 December and will be hosted by award-winning writer, producer and co-creator of flagship BBC show Sherlock, Mark Gatiss.
The Most Promising Newcomer prize held particular pertinence at the ceremony, with host Hayley Squires having won the elusive prize at last year’s awards. Nominations for this year’s prize include Lily Newmark for Pin Cushion, with Lady Macbeth offering both Cosmo Jarvis and Naomi Ackie.
Iconic British thespian Gary Oldman will receive The Variety Award, which recognises a director, actor, writer or producer who has made a global impact and helped to focus the international spotlight on the UK. Previous winners include Kate Winslet, Benedict Cumberbatch and Liam Neeson.
The ceremony is set to kick off the upcoming awards season in grand style and will champion the high quality of cinema that independent filmmaking has to offer.
