The Favourite led the way at this year’s British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), picking up a record 10 awards wins. Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy picked up Best Director, Best British Independent Film and Best Screenplay, with star Olivia Colman taking home Best Actress and Rachel Weisz winning best Supporting Actress.
The Best Actor category saw an underdog triumph, with rising star Joe Cole getting the nod for his starring role in boxing film A Prayer Before Dawn. Cole bested star-studded competition from the likes of Steve Coogan and Joaquin Phoenix. Best Supporting Actor went to Alessandro Nivola for his supporting role in Disobedience.
The Douglas Hickox Award was awarded to Turner Prize-winning artist Richard Billingham, for his debut directorial work Ray & Liz. The film also won Breakthrough Producer for Jacqui Davies.
Bart Layton’s American Animals and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here picked up two awards each, with the former winning Best Editing and Debut Screenwriter, and the latter Best Music and Best Sound.
Most Promising Newcomer went to star of Michael Pearce’s Beast, Jessie Buckley.
Fox Searchlight dominated from the distributor side, thanks to The Favourite’s powerhouse performance, with Altitude, New Wave and STX Entertainment picking up two awards and Curzon one.
Previously announced honorary awards went to Judi Dench and Felicity Jones, while Horace Ove picked up this year’s Special Jury Prize.
