The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival took place from Tuesday 16 May, through to Saturday 27 May. The Festival was packed with stars and celebrities from both in front of and behind the camera, hosting world premieres of some of the most anticipated films coming to the big screen in the next few months.

Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City received a six-minute standing ovation at its premiere. The film tells the story of a desert tourist trap that was one the sites of an asteroid landing, and stars an array of big Hollywood names, including Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Steve Carell and many more.

Asteroid City will be showing in UK cinemas from 23 June 2023.

Harrison Ford shed a tear at the premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, thanking the audience for the delighted reception: “The welcome is unimaginable and it makes me feel good.” 15 years after the previous Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Dial of Destiny marks one last adventure for Ford’s character. The film is expected to receive much love from old and new fans of the franchise alike.

Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny will be available to watch on the big screen from 28 June.

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon’s premiere was arguably one of the highlights of the Festival – the 3 hour 26 minute picture received a nine minute standing ovation from the audience. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone and is based on David Grann’s best-selling book of the same title. Set in 1920s Oklahoma, the film depicts the true story of the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.

Although Killers of the Flower Moon was produced under Apple Original Films (CEO Tim Cook made an appearance at Cannes to support the film), it will receive a full theatrical release before it arrives on the streaming service. This comes after Amazon gave Creed III a full theatrical release, in a welcome trend of streaming services and cinema working together.

Killers of the Flower Moon will be in UK cinemas from 20 October 2023.

The big winner of Cannes 2023 was Anatomie d’une Chute (Anatomy of a Fall), which took the coveted Palm D’or prize. French film director Justine Triet’s thriller is set in the French Alps, and is a riveting murder mystery which dissects one family’s relationship. Triet is only the third woman to win the Palme D’or, and the award was presented to her by legendary actor Jane Fonda, who remarked on how far Cannes has come since she first attended. This year’s Cannes Film Festival set a record for female representation, with seven female directors in competition.

The Grand Prix Prize was awarded to Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, which follows commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp. The film has been described as a nauseating horror, displaying the mental distance the family has put between themselves and the atrocities of the Holocaust happening so close to them.
