The first blockbuster of the stacked 2019 film slate, Captain Marvel, has defied all expectations to open with a fantastic £12.8m, which is the biggest opening weekend of 2019, as well as the biggest opening since Avengers: Infinity War in April 2018.

This represents Marvel’s sixth highest opening of all-time at the UK box office, beating outing stiff competition from last year’s cultural phenomenon Black Panther, which opened with £10.4m.

Taking 68% of the weekend’s box office earnings, Captain Marvel triumphed over Iron Man, Captain America and Thor to hold Marvel’s biggest ever three-day opening for a standalone debut.

The film’s UK success was echoed across the globe, opening with £117m in North America and a worldwide total of £348.
