CineEurope, the longest-running European convention and trade show for cinema exhibitors took place in Barcelona last week at the Centre Convencions International Barcelona (CCIB) and Digital Cinema Media (DCM) were there to find out what the industry can expect over the next 12 months, from technological changes through to the hugely exciting film slate. It’s a great opportunity to build relationships with exhibition partners and keep up to date with our unique, fast moving industry and attending on behalf of DCM were Steve Davis, Claire Renno and Tom Linay. With different priorities for the week, they each gave their take on what they got out of CineEurope 2015.

Steve Davis, Director of Exhibition:

As many of you know I’m a massive film fan. As such I do see it as a real privilege to be lucky enough to attend CineEurope.  It’s a long week, with a pretty intense schedule - also it wasn’t ideal that I flew out on Father’s Day morning. The week provided a great opportunity to understand some of the areas of focus for the Exhibitor industry, network and understand what’s in store in the coming months and years. There were some interesting seminars, including optimising data and looking at airline pricing models to maximise box office revenue. It was also great to meet up with so many of our Independent Exhibitors. I can honestly say I haven’t laughed so much ages - although not quite as much as Dorothy Smith of Zeffirellis during some early footage of Grimsby - the new Sacha Baron Cohen vehicle out in Q1 2016. The only thing better than the 2015 slate is the 2016 and 2017 slates to follow.

Claire Renno, Senior Project Manager:

The first time to CineEurope for me and what a fantastic opportunity and experience it was! I felt very privileged to have been part of such a fantastic industry event,  which brings so many countries, companies and sharing of ideas together all under one roof.  Of course the most exciting bit is that you get to see the great film slate for the remainder of the year and into 2016, and lucky enough to see a few films ahead of release too! But even down to the panel discussions and seminars and generally networking with people within the industry it was a really interesting and worthwhile experience.

Tom Linay, Head of Film:

Whilst I attended some insightful seminars, the main reason I was at CineEurope was for the slate presentations by each of the major distributors. The auditorium was kitted out with Dolby Atmos, the best projection equipment was installed and the distributors didn’t disappoint. Attendees are sworn to secrecy regarding the content of presentations (Steve Davis is now missing a toe after mentioning Grimsby in his report) but I can confirm that the rest of 2015 and 2016 as a whole is going to be a massively fruitful time for the industry. When the presentations finished, the socialising started, with Fox’s Peanuts Movie themed party the highlight and it was great to see some of our exhibitor partners and meet some new ones. I think I’m allowed back next year, and I’m already looking forward to it.

CineEurope 2016 will be back in Barcelona next June and it’s not to be missed.
