This summer, the UK saw new record-high temperatures of 40.3°C, as a heatwave took hold of the country in mid-July. However, this extreme heat did not deter cinema-goers: July's industry admissions totalled 13.3m, by far the biggest month of 2022 to date.

Big titles such as Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis and Thor: Love and Thunder, have all performed well throughout the summer, consistently holding top 10 (and often top 5) spots ever week at the UK box office since their release. Top Gun: Maverick became the first film of the year to cross the coveted $1 billion milestone worldwide, and to become 2022’s biggest hit so far!

Family films such as Minions: The Rise Of Gru and DC League Of Super-Pets were (and continue to be) big summer-holiday hits. In fact, Minions: The Rise Of Gru opened with a terrific £10.4m in the UK, the biggest opening for an animated film since Frozen II in 2019 (£15.2m), and by far the biggest of 2022.

Aside from the big blockbusters, many smaller films have performed consistently well across this summer:

Everything, Everywhere all at Once, directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (known as the “Daniels”) has had a successful run, achieving almost 500k DCM admissions overall. It also grossed over $100 million worldwide, becoming A24’s first movie to do so, and surpassing Hereditary (2018) as its highest-grossing film.

Horror film The Black Phone managed to achieve 480k DCM admissions over just a 10-week period, captivating 16-34 horror fans who will likely return to watch one or more of the many new horror films released this autumn.

Although still showing in theatres across the UK, Where the Crawdads Sing has already achieved over 539k DCM admissions. Based on the best-selling novel, this film caters to ABC1 women, and has already surpassed its estimated DCM admissions number.

Overall this summer, total industry admissions have been up 70% from June 2021, and 71% from July 2021, proving cinema’s steady comeback throughout 2022.

This appetite for cinema is set to continue with an exciting upcoming film slate for the rest of 2022. With DC’s Black Adam, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water still to come, there is so much to continue to draw cinemagoers back into the best seat in media.
