Vigilant members of staff from cinemas across the UK have been formally recognised and rewarded for their work in disrupting and preventing film piracy.

The 10 staff members were honoured at a presentation in hosted by the Film Content Protection Agency (FCPA) in Central London. The FCPA was formed last year by the Film Distributors’ Association (FDA) as a specialist unit dedicated to safeguarding theatrical releases in the UK.

Employees from Cineworld, Vue, Showcase and Light Cinemas feature on the list and each was given a financial reward and a certificate. Collectively they represented eight incidents, four of which led to arrests and four to formal police cautions.

Their successful efforts helped to protect UK releases including La La Land, T2: Trainspotting, Fifty Shades Darker and Trolls.

With 90% of pirated films being sourced directly from cinemas around the world, the FCPA programme supports and safeguards the UK film industry and ultimately the choices available to filmgoers themselves.

A key task of the FCPA programme is to develop the awareness and vigilance of cinema staff UK-wide by providing them with anti-piracy training, current best practice guidelines and other resources such as an online learning quiz at FDA’s website, launchingfilms.com, which refreshes the detailed knowledge needed to identify and disrupt illegal recording activity. Participating staff members are eligible for a reward of up to £500.

Meanwhile, the FCPA has announced a ‘Six Weeks of Spring’ campaign. The existing quarterly quiz prize will be supplemented by six additional weekly prizes. The winners will be selected from staff who successfully participate between 14 April and 26 May 2017.
