Box Office Round-up

Creed III made a sensational entrance this weekend, opening with a punchy £5m. The first Creed opened with £2.2m in 2015 and Creed II opened with just under £3m in 2018, so this third instalment has made a huge leap from those two. It looks to have the stamina to go the distance too as PostTrak’s exit polling saw it receive a full 5-star rating and a 92% Total Positive score.

Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania fell to second, adding £1.4m which takes its total after two weekends in cinemas to £17.2m. It has now overtaken the final total of Ant-Man (£16.3m) and over the next week it will overtake the final total of Ant-Man And The Wasp (£17.8m).

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish fell to third, adding £1.1m, a drop of 35% from last weekend. That takes its total to £22.1m and it’s the third biggest animated film post-pandemic. Incidentally all the top three animated films have been released by Universal.

Cocaine Bear had a great second weekend as it fell just 31% to £1.1m, which takes its total to £3.6m. For comparison, M3GAN fell 43% on its second weekend, so something is giving Cocaine Bear staying power.

What’s Love Got To Do With It rounded out the top five and also has staying power as it dropped just 22% from last weekend, to £846k. That takes its total to £2.7m so it has already surpassed the final total of last year’s February romcom Marry Me, which finished on £2.2m.

Outside of the top five, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To The Swordsmith Village is the latest anime title to crack the top 10 landing in sixth. It opened with £568k, which includes £388k from previews after opening on Wednesday. This is the second Demon Slayer title to hit cinemas, the first Demon Slayer: Mugen Train finished its run with £1.2m.

Polish title Heaven In Hell opened in tenth with £146k.

The box office is up 22% from last weekend and down 37% from the same weekend last year, when The Batman opened.

Next Weekend

Scream VI is the next instalment of the popular horror series. This time the survivors of the Ghostface killings leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter in New York City. It’s in cinemas on Wednesday.

65 is an action adventure starring Adam Driver as an astronaut who crash lands on a mysterious planet only to discover he's not alone. He’s not alone because the planet is populated by DINOSAURS!

He soon realizes that despite his doubts, together, this team can go further than they ever imagined. It’s directed by Bobby Farrelly (Dumb & Dumber, Kingpin, There’s Something About Mary).

The Buzz

Like the Creed series, the John Wick series has gone from strength to strength with each new instalment posting a significant admissions and box office increase on the previous instalment. John Wick Chapter Four is due out in just under three weeks on 23 March and according to tracking in the US, this fourth entry is again about to set a new benchmark. According to Deadline it’s tracking for an opening between $60m and $70m, with John Wick Chapter Three: Parabellum launching with $56.8m in 2019. In this fourth instalment John Wick uncovers a path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, he must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes. Keanu Reeves stars alongside Donnie Yen and Laurence Fishburne and if the recent trailer is anything to go by it’s going to feature some of the best action of 2023.

Across The Pond

Creed III smashed expectations in North America too, opening with a sensational $58.7m. The first Creed film opened with $29.6m in 2015 and Creed II opened with $35.6m in 2018, so this third instalment has set a huge new series best opening weekend. Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania added $12.5m, a drop of 61% from last weekend. That takes its total to $186.8m. Cocaine Bear added $11m in third, a drop of 53% from last weekend, which takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to $41.3m.
