The gala reopening of The Regal Redruth takes place this Sunday 21 July, following the completion of the latest £1.5m stage in a massive refurbishment of the town’s art deco landmark. The alterations have created five modern cinema auditoria with a re-modelled 650 seat cinema and live theatre within the existing original building.
Over the last five years, the Regal has been totally transformed with substantial renovation to the structure of the building, a new roof, complete rewire, the addition of a bar and restaurant, reinstatement of the original open plan foyer, new toilets and disabled access improvements. Three of the new licensed auditoria also have individual armchairs and sofas, a popular concept that has been trialled successfully at some of the company's other cinemas.
The Regal is in an ideal location, serving Western Cornwall, just off the A30 and two minutes from Redruth Railway station. Already attracting more than 100,000 people each year to the cinema, this number is expected to double as live shows and a greater choice of films will now be on offer.
Lee Dunkley, Redruth Town Development Manager, said: “The Regal is a huge draw for locals and visitors alike to Redruth Town Centre. It is a magnificent facility which complements the emergent and vibrant evening economy. Everyone at the Town Council and further afield is absolutely delighted to see the grand reopening of the cinema and theatre this summer.”
Geoff Greaves, Director of Merlin Cinemas, said: “The whole team who worked so hard on this huge project is delighted that the works are almost complete and looking forward to the Gala Reopening. We are sure that the new venue is going to prove popular with local people for film and theatre as well as bringing many more visitors into the centre of Redruth. We are also delighted to have had a great response from local dance and drama groups who want to use the new facilities. The Gala night will be a big thank you to everyone who has been involved in the transformation of this wonderful old cinema which now has a bright new future ahead.”
