Digital Cinema Media’s (DCM) Exhibition Director, Steven Davis, reflects on the second annual UK Cinema Association’s (UKCA) 2015 ‘Engage: Reward: Grow – marketing the big screen experience’ one-day conference that took place yesterday (17 November) at Picturehouse Central in London.

Over 300 UKCA members and colleagues were in attendance to consider the challenges and opportunities presented by the marketing of cinemagoing to the public.

Massive congratulations to Phil, Grainne and Annette of the UKCA on organising what was another superb conference yesterday.

Ian Shepherd, Group Chief Commercial Officer of Odeon and UCI Cinemas delivered the keynote address that set us up for the day, followed by some fascinating insights from the likes of YouGov, The Post Office, 20th Century Fox, Coca-Cola and Compare the Market, which all got the audience thinking about key trends and how cinema should engage with and serve its customers in the future.

There was also some lively debate in the final session from Crispin Lilly of Everyman, Dorothy Smith of Zeffirellis and Kevin Markwick of THE Uckfield Picture House. Never has a final session been more frank, interesting and amusing in equal measure.

The conference ended with a superbly embarrassing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ from the entire conference to Mr Phil Clapp who celebrated his 50th birthday this weekend.

So if you were unable to attend this year, do make sure if you only attend one industry event next year it’s the UKCA Conference.
