The Weekend Round-up

Cinema often faces a battle against consistent warm sunshine and with only one new release this weekend, the box office was up against it.

Russell Crowe’s Unhinged once again topped the box office adding £118k, a drop of 34% from last weekend. That takes its total to £447k and it’s on track to be in the top 10 films ever for distributor, Altitude.

Onward continues to prove a draw for families and added another £47k over the weekend, a drop of 21% from last weekend. That takes its total to £5.8m, and since cinemas began to re-open it has been in the top two every weekend and has grossed £525k, the most of any title. Another family title, the Australian animation 100% Wolf stayed in third spot adding £43k, an increase of 28% on last weekend’s total. It’s now up to £129k.

The only new entry in this weekend’s top 15 was Seth Rogen comedy-drama An American Pickle, which opened with £28k. This was a late addition to the release schedule and is bypassing cinemas in the US and going to streaming service HBO Max. Jurassic Park was the most popular of the classic films on release, adding another £27k, an increase of 17% from last weekend.

Comscore is reporting that there were 350 cinemas open in the UK and Ireland this past weekend (up from 323 last weekend), with 304 of them in the UK (up from 279). Overall the industry wide box office was down 10% from last weekend.
