Disney’s D23 2024: The biggest trailers and news

Disney’s biennial D23 showcase of its upcoming projects took place over the weekend in California, giving fans a look into what’s in store in the future. And there really is something for everyone!

Some of the biggest reveals included new trailer footage for Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King and Snow White.

Moana 2

Dwayne Johnson introduced a new trailer for the upcoming animated release of Moana 2, which hits cinemas on 27 November 2024. Set three years later, Moana and demigod trickster Maui team up once again to face a new threat to Oceania.

The film was conceived during the pandemic and originally targeted to launch directly on Disney+ until Disney CEO Bob Iger upgraded it to a theatrical release.

Mufasa: The Lion King

A new trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King was also revealed. This prequel is about how Mufasa comes to rule the Pride Lands. It comes to cinemas on 20 December 2024.

Snow White

A teaser trailer for Disney’s Snow White, which opens on 21 March 2025 gave a first look at Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot as Snow White and the Evil Queen respectively. This is a live-action adaptation of the beloved 1937 Disney classic ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ and is expected to be a big one with Disney fans.

Always Looking Forward – more big announcements

- Zoe Saldana has joined the voice cast of Elio, which opens on 13 June 2025, after its 2024 release date was pushed due to the Hollywood strikes. The story centres on a boy who gets beamed up into space where an intergalactic council mistakes him for the leader of Earth.

- Avatar creator Jim Cameron also revealed the full title of the third film in the franchise; Avatar: Fire and Ash. The 20th Century Studios tentpole is scheduled to open on 19 December 2025. The first two films, Avatar and Avatar: The Way Of Water, are the first and third all-time highest-grossing films at the global box office on $2.9bn and $2.3bn, respectively. Episodes four and five are scheduled to open on 21 December 2029 and 19 December 2031.

- Andrew Stanton is directing Toy Story 5 and said the plot involves the beloved toys going up against iPads, iPhones and other technological gadgetry. It will come to cinemas in the summer of 2026.

- Jennifer Lee brought concept art from Frozen 3, the sequel to the Disney Animation smash hits that have combined for more than $2.7m worldwide. The next instalment in the adventures of Elsa and Anna arrives in November 2027. Disney teased that a fourth film is in the works.

- In the Pixar segment, chief creative officer Pete Docter announced that Brad Bird is developing Incredibles 3.
