As cinemas start to reopen across the UK, Enders Analysis has published a report on the cinema industry's post pandemic future. While COVID-19 has forced the closure of theatres worldwide, putting pressure on cinema to a degree unlike ever before, the report finds that cinema remains first, although the film release strategy funnel may be shifting.
The findings outline that simultaneous releases are unacceptable for cinemas and TVOD’s sub-optimal financial reality means theatrical release will remain essential for most films. Films going straight to TVOD don’t get the benefit of increased publicity and ‘hype’ that films going to the cinema benefit from. The fan base garnered from theatrical releases also generates significant returns from merchandise.
