Robert Redford’s Sundance film festival is back in London for the second year this week, as a four-day stint at The O2 between 25 and 28 April. As well as the UK premières of American independent films fresh from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, there will be panel discussions and filmmaker Q&A’s. The line-up also features a series of music gigs, making the event a real intersection between the arts.
The Feature Film programme includes 2013 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Documentary Prize winner Blood Brother and In a World…, Lake Bell’s hilarious directional feature debut and winner of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award; as well as Muscle Shoals with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Gregg Allman, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Bono and others bearing witness to the greatest untold American music story about the legendary Alabama recording studio.
New to Sundance London, the UK Spotlight programme presents films from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival by UK filmmakers. Highlights include Michael Winterbottom’s highly anticipated The Look of Love, a modern day King Midas tale and true story of British adult magazine publisher and entrepreneur Paul Raymond starring Steve Coogan, Anna Friel, Imogen Poots and Tamsin Egerton. Also in the UK Spotlight is The Moo Man – an insightful documentary that follows a year in the life of heroic farmer Steve, scene stealing Ida (queen of the herd), and a supporting cast of 55 cows.
The Shorts Programme presents a stellar line up of Sundance Film Festival 2013 short film competition winners: Whiplash, The Date, Irish Folk Furniture, Until the Quiet Comes and Reindeer as well as the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Grand Jury winner The Whistle.
Nightly music concerts and presentations by known musicians also feature prominently on the agenda. In addition to great films and gigs, there will be a number of lively panel discussions with luminaries from both sides of the pond covering film music, comedy and screenwriting. The Art of the Score: An Afternoon With David Arnold will provide a master class with the musical director behind the score for Casino Royale, Tomorrow Never Dies, Independence Day, Stargate, Godzilla and latterly the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Senses of Humor/Humour: The Art of Comedy will see panellists drawn from UK and US actors, comedians and filmmakers battle to establish who is funnier and why (UK obviously!). Finally in the Screenwriting Flash Lab, UK and American screenwriters discuss the grit, determination and willpower necessary, along with the lessons learned from their biggest ‘cock-ups’.
Sundance London is presented by Robert Redford, Sundance Institute , and AEG Europe. Thirty percent of the profits from the event support Sundance Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences.
