The premier for Downhill took the glamour of the red carpet and turned it on its head, instead bringing a traditional Cumbrian twist to the film premier as we know it.

The screening was held at Zeffirellis in Ambleside on Tuesday 27 May and the film's stars Richard Lumsden (Sightseers) and Karl Theobald (Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa) were in attendance. For the premier the red carpet and fancy cocktails were nowhere to be seen. Instead attendees walked down the faux turf path, drinking pints of locally brewed ale and wearing worn-down walking boots. Pairing wellies with suits, guests were presented with a goodie bag when they arrived at the screening, which included a packet of cheesy Wotsits crisps.

The film, which was shot entirely on location, is a thought provoking comedy about four friends who take part in the Wainswright’s Coast to Coast walk and follows them along their ill-fated journey from Cumbria to North Yorkshire.

TV Commercial Director James Rouse shot the film alongside a small crew over three weeks, who were faced with the challenge of shooting whilst battling the challenging environment of the tricky terrains and unpredictable weather, walking on average 14 miles a day.

Despite the gruelling filming schedule, Richard Lumsden described shooting the film as the most fun he has ever had on a shot and that he thoroughly enjoyed exploring the great British Countryside.

The film, which has been praised for its portrayal of the Cumbrian location, was also particularly enjoyable for outdoor loving Karl Theobald, who is already planning his next trip to the county and described the Cumbrian region as “just breath-taking.”

The premier not only resulted in director James Rouse becoming visibly emotional following the audiences positive reaction to his feature debut, but it also raised over £900 for the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team.

Downhill is screening in selected cinemas from Friday 30 May and will be available to purchase from Monday 16 June.
