Hop bounds to top of UK Box Office

Hop

Russell Brand's latest big screen family adventure Hop has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend of release. The animated Easter-themed flick, co-starring James Marsden and Kaley Cuoco, raked in £1.39m to secure first place. With the school Easter holidays just around the corner, nobody would be terribly surprised if the animated "Easter Bunny" movie stays in the top 10 for a while yet.

Meanwhile Jake Gyllenhaal's science fiction thriller Source Code also opened this weekend to second place grossing £1.3m, it ranks just behind recent sci-fi thrillers Limitless (£2.1m) and The Adjustment Bureau (£1.4m).

Last week's number one Limitless has been pushed to number three ahead of Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch.

Elsewhere, Rango continues its impressive box office run. The Johnny Depp animation has been in cinemas for a month and has grossed £6.3m in total from UK screens.

Finally across the pond, Hop dominates the US chart at number 1 grossing an estimated $38.1m. This is to date the highest opening of 2011, beating Rango, and comparable films G-Force ($31.7m), Beverly Hills Chihuahua ($29.3m).
