DCM likes to get out and about meeting our independent exhibitors and finding out what’s happening at your sites. Whether you’re running special events, alternative evenings or launching new facilities we’d love to hear from you. This week, DCM Close Up highlights the launch of Funky Fridays at the Genesis Mile End, a celebrity visit to the Hackney Picturehouse and the newly opened Komedia at Dukes space in Brighton. Send your news to Rebecca Rau for inclusion in a future DCM Close Up.
Genesis Mile End
We’re looking forward to Funky Fridays this week as the Genesis Mile End in London launches its first monthly event in celebration of its newly renovated Bar Paragon. Named after the Paragon Theatre, as the site was known in 1885, the new boutique destination cinema bar will host regular Friday events, complete with a live DJ and mixologist to shake up a few cocktails and raise the roof. We wish Tyrone Walker-Hebborn and his team at the Genesis every success with the launch of Funky Fridays and their programme of other innovative cinema events.
Hackney Picturehouse
Damian Lewis and wife Helen McCrory joined producer Dixie Linder at the Hackney Picturehouse last week for the premiere of Broken, which stars Tim Roth and Cillian Murphy. A debut movie from acclaimed theatre director Rufus Norris, the award-winning Broken is a reminder that British independent film is alive and kicking. George Lamb was also spotted in the audience.

Komedia at Dukes
Congratulations to The Duke of York’s Picturehouse on the opening of its newly expanded Komedia space in Brighton. The initiative will make the city a centre for cinema in the region, while Komedia continues to provide cabaret, live music and its award-winning Krater Comedy Club.
A second, alternative set of the famous legs which extend from the top of the cinema building will be added to the Komedia’s façade. The site, Duke’s At Komedia, now includes a café and bar while the new screens are equipped with reclining seats.
Jon Barrenechea, general manager at the Duke of York’s, said: “We’ve been looking for a chance to expand the cinema for years and, with Komedia, we think we have found the perfect home."
