In the US, The Karate Kid kicked its way to the top on its opening weekend grossing an impressive $55.7m. Sony's exit polls indicated 53% of the audience was female, 56% under 25 and 45% parents with kids.
The remake starring Jaden Smith (Will and Jada Smith's son) and Jackie Chan boosted box office sales in the US. According to Entertainment Weekly, the underdog story made box office totals 11 percent higher than this time last year when blockbusters The Hangover and Up were in cinemas.
Released in the UK on July 30, Karate Kid is now on track to become one of the summer's biggest hits.
