La La Land leads the way for Oscars glory

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for; after another incredible year for films on the big screen, today the Oscar nominations were announced and come with the latest list of outstanding people and movie titles that are now in contention for a prestigious golden statue at next month's ceremony.

Having already won big at the Golden Globes and leading the way on the BAFTAs stage, La La Land is out in front with 14 nominations this year, equalling the all-time record of Titanic (1997) and All About Eve (1950). The film is nominated in categories including Best Picture, Best Actor and Actress, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

La La Land is also now the most nominated musical ever, overcoming Mary Poppins, which previously held the title. Here’s how the rest of the picture looks for next month’s awards ceremony…

The films that have been chosen to compete in the Best Picture category are: Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures, Lion, Moonlight, Fences, Hell or High Water, La La Land and Manchester by the Sea.

The Cinematography line-up looks like this: Arrival, La La Land, Lion, Moonlight and Silence.

The Original Screenplay nominees are as follows: Hell or High Water, La La Land, The Lobster, Manchester by the Sea and 20th Century Women.

The Adapted Screenplay contenders are: Arrival, Fences, Hidden Figures, Lion and Moonlight.

The Directing nominees look like this: Denis Villeneuve (Arrival), Mel Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge), Damien Chazelle (La La Land), Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea) and Barry Jenkins (Moonlight).

The Leading Actors nominated for an award within those films are Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Ryan Gosling (La La Land) and Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), as well as Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Denzel Washington (Fences).

As for the Leading female talent; the following feature on the list for that section: Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving), Natalie Portman (Jackie), Emma Stone (La La Land) and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins). Meryl Streep is now the most nominated actress in Oscar history!

Supporting Actors include: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Dev Patel (Lion) and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals).

And Supporting Actresses are set up like this: Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Nicole Kidman (Lion), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) and Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea).

For the cartoon enthusiasts, the Animation Feature section throws up these five films: Finding Dory, Moana, My Life as a Zucchini, The Red Turtle and Zootopia.

The all-important winners will be announced at a ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday 26 February 2017.
