On a sweltering Friday night last week, DCM’s resident Film Specialist, Tom Linay, took a trip to the BFI IMAX to see mega monster/robot battle, Pacific Rim.
In amongst all the giant robot versus giant monster mayhem that has filled the trailers and television spots for Guillermo Del Toro’s latest blockbuster, it appears that the fact that Pacific Rim is probably the most family friendly of all the summer’s big films is being kept a secret from the general public.
Once I’d caught my breath after all the expertly orchestrated destruction had finished and I left the BFI’s IMAX, the first thought that entered my head was how much I’d love to take my eight year-old nephew to see it. I have a feeling the incredible scale of the film would blow his mind the way that Star Wars did to me when I was a similar age.
That’s not to say it’s only for kids. The characters and plot are broad enough for everyone to get something from and the action scenes, while intense, are not scary or too violent for younger members of the family. In this respect, Pacific Rim is refreshingly free from pretention. It’s about humans piloting giant robots to fight giant monsters and it follows through on this premise spectacularly.
The characters may be thin and utter the odd cheesy line but that never stopped Avatar being a stunning big screen experience. Pacific Rim delivers on its promise better than any other big film this summer and should be of interest to kids aged six to 60.
