The nominations for the 2020 BAFTA Film Awards have been announced today (7 January 2020). Joker leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Leading Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Film, closely followed by Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood and The Irishman, with 10 nominations respectively.
Ahead of its UK cinema release on Friday, Golden Globes standout 1917 picked up nine nominations, including Best Director for Sam Mendes.
Margot Robbie takes home not one but two nominations for Supporting Actress, for her roles in Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood and Bombshell, but faces tough competition from Florence Pugh and Golden Globes winner Laura Dern.
Little Women is nominated for five awards, including Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actress for Saoirse Ronan and Supporting Actress for Florence Pugh.
The BAFTAs have added their first new category in 21 years, recognising Casting, with Joker, Little Women and Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood included in the nominations.
The EE Rising Star Award, announced yesterday, is contested between Awkwafina, Jack Lowden, Kaitlyn Dever, Kelvin Harrison Jr, and Micheal Ward. The award is voted for by the British public and presented to an actress or actor who has demonstrated exceptional talent and has begun to capture the imagination of the UK public. BIFA standout For Sama has picked up four BAFTA nominations, including Outstanding British Film.
