It’s hard to believe that One Direction was just a group of ‘ordinary lads’ only three years ago, living regular lives, before the success of The X-Factor and Simon Cowell’s backing launched them into worldwide super-stardom. The band has quickly gained a following to become one of the competition's all-time most popular acts, garnering a gigantic and loyal fan base of ‘Directioners’ along the way.
Harry, Niall, Liam, Louis and Zayn have sold over 13 million records worldwide, dominating international airwaves and, as of this summer, cinema screens too.
The One Direction: This Is Us 3D film documents the boys on their latest world tour, giving fans an intimate all-access look at life on the road for the global music phenomenon, as well as an insight into what life was like for the band pre- and post- stardom.
For one-fifth of the group, working life began on the other side of the screen. It was not long ago that 21 year-old multi-millionaire pop star Louis Tomlinson was dishing out popcorn, cleaning cinema screens and manning the box office under the supervision of Worksop Savoy Cinema manager Wayne Gregory.
Wayne is sure to be the envy of Directioners for being one of the lucky few to have been a part of this member’s life before he was famous.
“Louis worked as a general assistant at a cinema in Doncaster where I was manager,” said Wayne. "We all shared in his excitement as he auditioned for X Factor and got through to the live shows.”
“Louis is such a genuine, down to earth lad. All the way through the TV shows he kept in touch with his colleagues at the cinema.”
“I’m really proud of what he has achieved. Singing is what he always wanted to do, and he is living his dream.”
It came as no surprise to Wayne that the opening weekend drew huge crowds of excited Directioners to the Worksop cinema, packing out screens and foyer space decked in their One Direction merchandise.
Cinemagoers were also given the opportunity to catch an exclusive peek of the film at a preview screening the preceding Thursday.
Although Louis was unable to make it in the flesh, fans were more than happy to make do with a cardboard version of the star, posing for pictures and wrapping their arms around the life-size cut-out. Wayne should not be surprised if he is asked to pose in Directioners’ photos himself now he has revealed his very own claim to fame.
