Johnny Depp dominates the big screen again in his new family flick Rango. Opening to a respectable £1.6m on its debut weekend, the animated Western went straight to the top of the UK box office, holding off stiff competition from The Adjustment Bureau and Unknown.
The Adjustment Bureau takes second place, more than doubling the box office takings for Matt Damon's last thriller Hereafter, grossing a solid £1.4m in its opening weekend. Euro-thriller Unknown followed closely in third place grossing £1.35m, whilst The King's Speech rises again to fifth place on the back of its recent Academy Awards success.
Across the pond Rango 2D generated a strong $38m (estimated) in the US over the weekend. This is a well deserved result for this quirky family film. Exit polls indicated 54% of the audience was female with 54% aged over 25. The Adjustment Bureau opened in second place grossing an estimated $20.9m. This is the highest opening gross for Matt Damon outside of the Bourne franchise, and ranks slightly under the recent Liam Neeson thriller Unknown ($21.9m).
