The great and the good of the European cinema industry are gathered in Barcelona this week for CineEurope 2014 to celebrate excellence, share expertise, network with partners and for a sneak-peak at highlights of the upcoming film slate.

CineEurope is the official annual Convention of the International Union of Cinema (UNIC) and the premier get-together of the cinema exhibition community in Europe. The UK’s Chairman of the Cinema Exhibitors’ Association (CEA), Phil Clapp addressed the industry in his role as President of UNIC as part of the opening ceremony, in a programme of events covering hot topics such as industry innovation, technology and digital delivery, event cinema and exclusive distributor film screenings.

Movie industry luminaries and companies will be honoured at the CineEurope Awards Ceremony and Dinner Reception on the evening of Thursday 19 June at the Centre Convencions Internacional Barcelona (CCIB). A Dinner Reception, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company and Rentrak, will precede the Awards Ceremony which will be hosted by The Coca-Cola Company. Awards to be presented include Rentrak’s International Box Office Achievement Award, presented to Warner Bros. Pictures International for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug; CineEurope’s Independent Film Award to Germany’s Constantin Film; International Exhibitor of the Year Award to Alan McNair, Deputy CEO and CFO, Vue Entertainment; and The Coca-Cola Retail Achievement Award.

The DCM team on the ground in Barcelona has enjoyed some fantastic previews from all the main distributors over the last few days, as well as personal appearances by Colin Firth and Luc Vesson. Steve Davis, DCM’s Head of Exhibition and Rebecca Rau, Exhibition Account Manager, have been busy catching up with the UK’s Exhibition contingent including Dorothy Smith (Zeffirelli’s Ambleside), Kevin Markwick and Rachel Tout (Uckfield Picturehouse), Steve and Bev Reynolds (Four Seasons Entertainment), as well as Keith Pullinger and Damian Drabble (Light Cinemas).

Check back next week for a full round up of the highlights from Barcelona.
