Selfridges to open in-store cinema

Selfridges is to open the first cinema to be operated within a department store. The cinema will initially screen films tied to the store's Masters campaign where 12 influential fashion designers will select their favourite films which will go on to be screened, reports PA.

Ths selection will include The Virgin Suicides, as chosen by Marc Jacobs, and Withnail and I, which is the favourite of Paul Smith.

The Oxford Street shopping attraction's first screening of a new release will be a preview of Woody Allen's Magic in the Moonlight, which stars Colin Firth and Emma Stone, taking place on September 18 ahead of its official release the following day. The cinema – in collaboration with the independent chain Everyman – opened on September 5, where it will screen Sixties films Breakfast at Tiffany's and Breathless, as well as 2014 box office hits The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Wolf of Wall Street.

"Shopping is a fun form of escapism, so to offer our customers access to the escapist power of cinema within Selfridges, makes for a great combination," said Selfridges creative director Linda Hewson. Ticket prices range from £7.50 for a kids' club screening to £20 for an evening seat. The cinema is scheduled to run until spring 2015.
