Box Office Round-up
Shazam! Fury Of The Gods became the latest superhero film to open at the top of the box office. The DC action-adventure opened with £2.4m, which is some way down on the £3.9m the first Shazam! which opened with in April 2019. The hope for Shazam! Fury Of The Gods is that it will be a draw during the Easter school holidays in a couple of weeks. While there are big plans afoot for the DC extended universe it would appear that Shazam! may not play a big part in them.
One franchise that is going from strength to strength is Creed and this weekend Creed III added £1.2m, which takes it to £11.7m after three weekends in cinemas. It’s now comfortably the biggest film in the series, surpassing the £10.1m final total of Creed II and it’s almost doubled the final total of the first Creed (£5.9m).
Last week’s top film, Scream VI fell to third, adding £987k, a drop of 58% from last weekend. That takes its total after 11 days in cinemas to £5.1m and after its second weekend last year’s fifth Scream film, cleverly titled Scream, was on £4.8m, although that was from one fewer day in cinemas.
Allelujah, an adaptation of Alan Bennett’s play, opened in fourth with £716k, which includes £27k from previews. This time last year Phantom Of The Open opened with £458k, while Fisherman’s Friends: One And All opened with £654k in August, so Allelujah has surpassed them.
65 completed the top five, adding £568k, a drop of 55% from last weekend. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to £2.4m.
Outside of the top five, Rye Lane opened in seventh with £259k, which includes £40k from previews, while What’s Love Got To Do With It has crossed £4m in eighth and Cocaine Bear crossed the £5m mark in 10th.
The box office is down 25% from last weekend and up 10% from the same weekend last year.
Next Weekend
John Wick: Chapter 4 is the latest action extravaganza starring Keanu Reeves. This time around John Wick uncovers a path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes. It’s in cinemas on Thursday.
80 For Brady stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field as a group of friends who have made it their life-long mission to go to the Super Bowl and meet NFL superstar Tom Brady.
Infinity Pool is the latest film from Brandon Cronenberg (Possessor). Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth play James and Em Foster who are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors.
The Buzz
Air, the new film from Ben Affleck, had its world premiere at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas on Saturday night and the responses from critics in attendance have been pretty rapturous. It follows the history of shoe salesman Sonny Vaccaro, and how he led Nike in its pursuit of the greatest athlete in the history of basketball: Michael Jordan. Affleck stars as Nike founder Phil Knight, alongside Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Jason Bateman and Chris Tucker. Indiewire gave it their top mark of A+, something of a rarity, and called it ‘one of the best sports movies ever made’, while Variety called it ‘this generation’s Jerry Maguire’. The Wrap were similarly effusive, saying ‘The banter in Convery’s script is entertaining, but it’s truly the actors under Affleck’s excellent direction that makes “Air” feel like something special.’ It’s in cinemas on Wednesday, 5 April.
Across The Pond
Shazam! Fury Of The Gods opened top but also below expectations, with $30.5m. The first instalment opened with over $50m, so it looks unlikely we’ll get a third instalment. Scream VI added $17.5m in second, which takes its total to $76m, while Creed III added $15.4m in third for a new total of $127.7m. 65 is up to $22.4m in fourth, after adding $5.8m over the weekend, while Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania is over the $200m mark in fifth after a weekend total of $4.1m takes it to $205.8m.
