Box Office Round-up

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is back in the top spot, falling just 24% to £2m which takes its total after 25 days in cinemas to £23.4m. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse finished its run with £10.9m, so this sequel has already more than doubled the total of that film. It’s currently the fifth biggest film to be released in 2023 and in the next week will overtake The Little Mermaid to become the fourth biggest film released this year.

Last weekend’s top film, The Flash, fell to second adding £1.3m, a drop of 58% from last weekend (once previews are removed). That takes its total after two weekends in cinemas to £6.8m and while that’s a disappointing number considering Black Adam finished its run with £20m, The Flash has already surpassed the final total of March’s Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, which finished with £6m.

Star-led comedy is back in the top five, as Jennifer Lawrence’s No Hard Feelings opened with £1.2m, which includes £322k in previews after opening on Wednesday. This is Lawrence’s first film to hit cinemas since X-Men: Dark Phoenix in June 2019. Director Gene Stupnitsky’s last film was the comedy Good Boys, which opened with £846k in 2019 and finished with £3.2m, so No Hard Feelings will be looking to surpass that.

One of cinemas most recognisable auteurs is also back in the top five, as Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City opened in fourth with £1.2m, including £70k from previews. Anderson’s last film in cinemas was 2021’s The French Dispatch which opened with £869k and finished with £4.2m, so Asteroid City is already tracking ahead of that. His best performing film to date is 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel which finished it run with an impressive £11.5m.

The Little Mermaid rounded out the top five, adding £1.1m, just 18% down from last weekend. That takes its total after five weekends in cinemas to £23.7m and it’s now looks pretty good for surpassing Dumbo’s final total of £25.1m.

Outside of the top five, Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts had a decent hold and surpassed the £6m mark in the process. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is in 11th and is now up to £53.7m and is less than £100k from overtaking Frozen II to become the third highest grossing animated film in history.

Next Weekend

Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny is the final outing for one of the most beloved characters of all-time. Archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary artifact that can change the course of history. It’s in cinemas from Wednesday.

The Buzz

We’re now less than a month away from the big showdown of the summer – Barbie vs Oppenheimer on 21 July. Speculation is rife over which film is likely to come out on top – Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has the buzz, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has the pedigree and whichever takes the number one spot at the box office, surely cinema is the real winner. Tickets for both are set to go on sale over the next week and anticipation is set to increase even further over the next few weeks as we get closer to the big day. We’re forecasting Barbie to deliver 9 16-34 women TVRs but if the film is as big as the buzz don’t be surprised to see that surpassed.

Across The Pond

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse also reclaimed the top spot in the US too, adding £19.3m, a drop of 29% from last weekend, which takes its total to an impressive $317.1m. Elemental added $18.5m in second, which takes its total to $65.5m. The Flash had the worst second week drop of any film in the DCEU, falling 73% to $15.3m for a 10-day total of $87.6m. No Hard Feelings opened with $15.1m, and Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts completed the top five, adding $11.6m for a new total of $122.9m.
