The trailer for one of 2015’s most notorious films debuted online two weeks ago and has already broken records for the number of trailer views. The big screen adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey has been the source of much online chatter since it was announced last year and when the first sneak-peak finally landed in late-July, the chatter reached a record breaking crescendo.
The trilogy of books has been a huge hit around the world and that looks to be translating into interest in the film. The trailer has already had over 100m views worldwide, with over 23m in the UK alone. For comparison, the trailer for the final Twilight film, Breaking Dawn Part 2 on the official Twilight YouTube channel has 11.8m views. It’s fair to say Fifty Shades is going to be big.
Directed by Turner Prize nominated visual artist, Sam Taylor-Johnson the film tells the story of literature student, Anastasia Steele whose life changes forever when she meets the handsome, yet tormented, billionaire Christian Grey. Dakota Johnson, daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffiths, plays Anastasia and British heart-throb, Jamie Dornan plays the mysterious Christian Grey.
Released in time for Valentine’s day 2015, a host of brands have already begun queuing up to partner with the film on the big screen. Ideal for brands looking to target an 18-44 female audience early next year, especially brands who align perfectly with the more risqué material. It presents a huge commercial opportunity and brands are acting early to secure their spot with what is sure to be one of 2015’s most talked about films.
