Box Office Round-up
A Minecraft Movie is an adaptation of the biggest selling video game of all-time, and it has translated into huge box office numbers, as it has opened with a frankly ridiculous £15m (including £129k from previews), the biggest opening weekend since Barbie in July 2023. Yes, that’s bigger than Wicked, Moana 2, Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. That’s even bigger than The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which opened on this weekend two years ago with £15.7m, but that was across five days after a Wednesday launch. A Minecraft Movie has matched that in three days. Mario finished its run with £54.9m, and A Minecraft Movie has to be looking at a similar result. What a story! It seems that Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy is not going to be the biggest film of the year to date for long.
The second biggest title of the weekend is a major event cinema success. Six The Musical was in cinemas on Sunday and grossed a terrific £2.1m, making it one of the most successful event cinema launches ever. It’s already the second biggest event cinema title of 2025, behind Macbeth: David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, which has grossed £2.3m. Six The Musical is back in cinemas on Tuesday, and there will no doubt be further screenings over the coming weeks, so it will sail past Macbeth.
In the face of the Minecraft juggernaut and consistently sunny weather, the rest of the films have suffered. Snow White fell to third, adding £670k, which is a drop of 67% from last weekend. That takes its total after three weekends in cinemas to £8m. 2015’s live-action Cinderella finished its run with £21.3m, but Snow White is sadly not getting close to that.
A24 films are back in the top five, as the Jenna Ortega-starring Death Of A Unicorn opened in fourth with £487k. In her short career to date, Jenna Ortega has experienced consistent success on the big screen, from the Scream series, to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Death Of A Unicorn doesn’t look like it will be continuing this success.
A Working Man rounded out the top five, adding £331k for a new total of £1.4m. Last year, director David Ayer and star Jason Statham collaborated on The Beekeeper, which finished its run with £3.8m.
Outside of the top five, Mr Burton, a drama about the formative years of Richard Burton, opened in 10th with £139k, which includes £8k from previews.
Next Weekend
The Amateur is a thriller directed by James Hawes (One Life, TV’s Slow Horses). When his supervisors at the CIA refuse to take action after his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack, a decoder takes matters into his own hands. Rami Malek, Laurence Fishburne, and Rachel Brosnahan star.
Drop is a thriller from Blumhouse starring Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar. A widowed mother's first date in years takes a terrifying turn when she's bombarded with anonymous threatening messages on her phone during their upscale dinner, leaving her questioning if her charming date is behind the harassment.
The Buzz
Tron: Ares is a sequel to Tron: Legacy, which came out in December 2010 and grossed £10.5m. That film was filled with cutting edge visuals married with a striking Daft Punk soundtrack. This sequel has similarly eye-popping visuals and a score by Nine Inch Nails. It looks to be a feast for the eyes and ears when it hits cinemas on 11 October. As for the plot, a highly sophisticated program, Ares, is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission. The cast includes Jeff Bridges, Jared Leto, and Past Lives’ Greta Lee. This is also co-written by British writer Jack Thorne, who has had huge success recently with the Netflix show Adolescence, which he wrote and executive produced. It looks like a great way to reach 16-34 men in Q4.
Across The Pond
A Minecraft Movie has gone crazy in North America too, opening with a huge $163m. A Working Man fell to second, adding $7.3m, a drop of 53% from last weekend. That takes its total to $27.8m. The Chose: Last Supper Part 2 opened in third with $6.7m, while Disney’s Snow White fell to fourth, adding $6.1m for a new total $77.5m. The Woman In The Yard rounded out the top five, adding $4.5m for a new total of $16.7m.
