2015 has been a force unto itself and the performance of key blockbusters across the year has so far smashed all expectations, with records broken across the board. As we enter the second half of this remarkable year and welcome the summer months, this month we’re looking at the opportunities for family brands to utilise the power of cinema in July.

July is one of the best months this year to target that hard-to-reach family audience. With both 2015’s hottest family releases unleashed in July to coincide with the school summer holidays, it’s the ideal time to be onscreen for brands targeting the integrated housewives and kids demographic when one third of family admissions come during the summer. Whilst the yellow Minions invasion on 26 June delivered one of the five biggest opening weekends this year (£11.6m), which is also the biggest opening of an animated film ever (Fri-Sun), it is the release of the emotion picture Inside Out on 24 July that has got everyone talking for all the right reasons.

The latest Pixar gem opened in the US with a whopping $91m, the biggest opening for a non-sequel in box office history, breaking Avatar’s 2009 record of $77m in the process. Targeting both adults and children with its more mature subject matter, the overwhelmingly positive reviews that emerged from Cannes have universally praised its emotionally powerful script and heart-warming tone, and the trailer has now amassed 19m+ YouTube views.

With over 4.1m DCM admissions expected for the film, time is running out to buy into what will be one of the biggest family hits since Toy Story 3 (£74m) and a likely contender for the best animated feature Oscar in 2016.

Don’t just take our word for it - this chart illustrates just how extraordinary cinema will be for family brands this summer:

One third of all DCM family admissions this year will be delivered in July and August. If you want to take advantage of cinema’s extraordinary impact on family viewers, there is no better time to do so.

And if this summer’s slate isn’t enough, the family fun continues well into Q4. Hotel Transylvania 2, Pan, Paper Planes, Snoopy & Charlie Brown: A Peanuts Movie and a second Pixar movie, The Good Dinosaur, are all set to enthral kids and their parents up until the New Year – great news, surely, for any family brand.
