After a multi-month break, UK cinemas have reopened with a bang, with the release of the highly-anticipated espionage thriller Tenet. Christopher Nolan is the most exciting blockbuster director of his generation and has a devoted following among the core 16-34 audience, meaning expectations for Tenet to attract this hard-to-reach demographic has been high.
The first wave of Film Monitor data for the blockbuster has now been released and the audience data strongly suggests that, despite doubts cast upon the future of blockbuster cinema content following the closure of cinemas in March 2020, the blockbuster audience is going nowhere.
The data shows 54% of Tenet’s audience so far has been within the key 16-34 demo, edging ahead of the 16-34 profile achieved by cultural touchstone Avengers: Endgame (52%) and other major blockbusters including Blade Runner 2049 (49%) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (46%).
Tenet’s appeal to the 16-34 demographic shows that despite the period of uncertainty in the country, cinema remains the best seat in media for engaging the key 16-34 audience.
