BAFTA 2014 Nominees

The 2014 EE British Academy Film Awards took place at the Royal Opera House last night, hosted by the suave and quintessentially British, Stephen Fry. The awards recognise and celebrate the wealth of content and talent in the British film industry. DCM’s Commercial Director, Joe Evea, was in attendance and admitted to being a little star struck when coming face to face with some of the brightest stars in the industry, including Leonardo DiCaprio.

Gravity collected the most awards, six in total, including Best Director and Outstanding British Film. Although 12 Years a Slave surprisingly only collected two awards, it picked up the coveted Best Picture prize and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor. American Hustle won three awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Hollywood golden girl, Jennifer Lawrence and Best Original Screenplay. Best Actress went to Cate Blanchett, as expected, for her terrific performance in Blue Jasmine and Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope picked up the Best Adapted Screenplay award for their touching and witty script for Philomena.

Perhaps the most surprising and pleasing award was former limousine driver Barkhad Abdi winning the Best Supporting Actor award, ahead of Michael Fassbender, for his mesmerising performance opposite Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips.

12 Years a Slave and Martin Scorsese’s epic, The Wolf of Wall Street, will probably be the most disappointed, with the afore-mentioned Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o missing out on acting awards for 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street failing to pick up a single award. Both will be expecting to do better at the upcoming Academy Awards on 2 March but with no obvious favourite and Dallas Buyers Club coming into contention after being snubbed by BAFTA, it really is wide open.

Think you have a handle on the awards season? Cast your Oscars votes in the DCM Fantasy Film League (FFL) for your chance to win a red carpet experience.
