Last month we highlighted the start of the biggest Q2 in history and, this month, it’s the climax. Q2 may mark the start of the FIFA World Cup, but cinemas are expecting big things too, with two of the most exciting blockbusters of the summer running throughout the tournament. There’s also classy fare for the more discerning viewer too, with an adaptation of a booker-nominated British novel and a sequel to one of the most nail-biting thrillers of recent years.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
- Target audience: All adults
- Director: J.A. Bayona
- Cast: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum
- Release date: 6 June 2018
- Est. DCM admissions: 4.5m
Dinosaurs are back! In June 2015, Jurassic World took everyone by surprise by grossing over £64m and crashing into the top 10 films of all time like an Indominus Rex through an unelectrified fence. The UK public clearly still love dinosaurs and would like more. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return and in terrific news, Jeff Goldblum has been persuaded to reprise his role as Ian Malcolm. Spanish director, J.A. Bayona has proved himself an expert with visual effects and big screen emotion with The Impossible and A Monster Calls, so this should easily be one of 2018’s biggest films.

- Director: Gary Ross
- Cast: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson
- Release date: 22 June 2018

One of the best casts of any 2018 film has been assembled for this heist-thriller, following on from the hugely successful Ocean’s series. Sandra Bullock stars as Danny Ocean's estranged sister Debbie, who attempts to pull off the heist of the century at New York City’s star-studded annual Met Gala. Her first stop is to assemble the perfect crew. Releasing in the middle of the football World Cup, this should be some top quality big screen escapism from the wall-to-wall football on television.

Ian McEwan’s booker-shortlisted novel is a drama set in the early 1960s and centred on a young couple on their honeymoon. Saoirse Ronan looks to continue her amazing hot-streak after Brooklyn and Lady Bird and director, Dominic Cooke is a four-time Olivier winning theatre director. It should be an upmarket summer treat.

Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario was one of the best action-thrillers of recent years, nabbing three Oscar nominations. This sequel sees the drug war on the US-Mexico border escalating as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver re-teams with the mercurial Alejandro. Josh Brolin returns as Graver and Benicio Del Toro reprises his BAFTA-nominated role as Alejandro.
